Sophia: Eastern Angles’ Autumn Tour

My task here was to manage the marketing of Eastern Angles’ autumn tour of Sophia, a new play by Hannah Kumari. The play documented the life of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, a prominent suffragette and daughter of the last Maharaja of India.

The tour included visiting established venues including Norwich Theatre Royal, Seckford Theatre and Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds plus smaller village hall venues across East Anglia.

one of the challenges here was to produce content suitable for each venue, the marketing needs for Norwich Theatre Royal would be significantly different from a village hall. This required close communication with each venue, for example many village halls required a specific amount of flyers and posters with no requirement for digital content, whereas the more established venues required rehearsal photos, production photos and digital content.

I maintained close communication with every tour venue and ensured each had everything they needed. For example I would take the time to make sure each venue had artwork in the correct dimensions for their websites and social media channels. Helping to give Sophia‍ a professional look on each venues’ website and social channel.

Due to budget restraints I had to think strategically around where to place my spending, making sure we had quality rehearsal and production images felt important for the show and so I made sure these were taken by a professional photographer, making sure to brief the photographer and be on hand for any queries during the shoot.

Digital content was a spend we couldn’t afford but instead of missing this out completely I decided to throw myself into the task of filming and editing audience Vox Pops myself, investing in some simple equipment such as a microphone and phone gimbal helped to give the Vox Pops a more professional feel and this was useful content for each venue to use on their website and social media.

Another way in which I mantained a healthy budget was to bulk order posters and flyers and then overprint them in the office, then send out to each venue. Getting a printer to do this directly would have cost significantly more and this way I made sure we didn't go over budget for the tour.

Key Takeaways for Sophia:

  • Maintaining close communication with each venue to ensure they have the required marketing for their venue.

  • Thinking strategically about where to spend budget and where we could save on budget.

  • Not allowing budget constraints to prevent content creation.
